Autumn has come to inkandlightarts, hop on over;
Autumn…
I know spring is supposed to bring new beginnings but for me it has always been autumn, new books and fresh pages, new pens and pencils, fresh starts… It’s by far my favourite season, when the air smells crisp or earthy; filled with coffee or smoke from fires, the taste of gritty pears and comfort foods, golden light and fiery leaves, nights with every star in the sky, candlelight and sparklers, warm jumpers and well loved scarfs, walks in the woods and blankets on the beds… and oh I’m making plans, to be me, to be strong and sure and safe, to centre myself and breathe in deep…
Meet Joe Black (1998)
Death and Taxes…
This film is again a yarn of love and death and is a remake of the 1934 film Death Takes a Holiday, which in turn was based on an Italian play itself no doubt a retelling of several folktales about death taking human form. It’s a beautiful film more about life than death and always reminds me of one of my favourite poems; suppose by e e cummings:
suppose
Life is an old man carrying flowers on his head.
young death sits in a cafe
smiling, a piece of money held between
his thumb and first finger
(i say “will he buy flowers” to you
and “Death is young
life wears velour trousers
life totters, life has a beard” i
say to you who are silent.-“Do you see
Life? he is there and here,
or that, or this
or nothing or an old man 3 thirds
asleep, on his head
flowers, always crying
to nobody something about les
roses les bluets
yes,
will He buy?
Les belles bottes-oh hear
, pas cheres”)
and my love slowly answered I think so. But
I think I see someone else
there is a lady, whose name is Afterwards
she is sitting beside young death, is slender;
likes flowers.
The Fountain (2006)
a simple fable about love and death- Empire
A triptych of narratives which interweave and intersect, all dealing with the key themes of Love and Death. It is visually beautiful; golds, deep darks and whites with flashes of red; stars and falling snow, Queens, maps and men who wander far from home, pen and ink and an unfinished tale, Love and Death and the lives in between…
