Ask me anything   Once Upon a Time and Here and Now...

A collection of inspirations and notes expanding on my sketchbooks...

twitter.com/SiobhanRodgers:

    Wow… I know I’ve been away for so long, many catch up posts will follow, but just for now: This wonderful present arrived from America this afternoon, the note reads; “She’s small, pale and beautifully formed, she’s got class, looks stunning in red and sounds amazing when you turn her on… The record player ain’t bad either…” Oh he’s a clever, clever man! Even if it’s a wash out at least my summer will sound good… Xx

    A “highlight” mosaic of my Masters…
I graduated last June and I’m slowly forming a map to keep going… I retold thirteen fairy tales, here are only five. It was hard work and heart-breaking, it was rewarding and sorely overlooked, it was;
Fairy tales, red lines; through woods, through galleries and books and sketched onto the city itself, crossroads suppers, snow, spindles and spells stitched in. Those rosy apples and pitch black hair, red on white and poetry or wishes written on walls, superstitions, roses thorns and bog cotton, bleeding fingers and an aching heart. It was charms and velvet, embroidered silk and rush jackets fit for forest kings, bones and bread and bullets, hawthorn, keys and sugary rain, pebbles piled high and stacks of love letters. It was barefoot summers, dancing circles with the weave and blanket wrapped winters spilling thousands of words onto white pages, it was helpful princes, hunters and wood-cutters, bad fairies and all with a wolf nipping at my heels…
I’m so glad it’s over, but seeing it all together like this makes me ready for whatever is next…

    I’ve been away for a few days, in a very bad place, but now I’m back and look what came while I was gone; my first piece of Agent Provocateur lingerie and beside it on the door step, Simone de Beauvoir. Yes, yes I know, perhaps not the best match, but bear with me;
I’m a feminist, it’s not a dirty word, it doesn’t mean I hate men, don’t bother with my appearance, or don’t have a sense of humor etc and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m going to burn my bras… It simply means I believe in equality regardless of sex, race, religion or class. I’m a woman, fact, I should not be punished or praised for that fact, it simply is, I don’t want to “do it like a dude” I do however want equal rights to one…
Now I may need to sit down with a woman who was there in the sixties and I do realise that my generation has been presented with a constantly over-sexualised image of the female form on an unprecedented scale, I know the media pressure for so called perfection is overwhelming and the male gaze is now more prevalent than it was at the height of the feminist movement, I know the men of my generation look through this gaze and the young women preform for it, both without thinking. I’m aware that consumerism now drives society, and my generation have become spectators rather than participants in our own culture. So perhaps a sexy and expensive bra isn’t the best flag to wave for feminism or my socialist roots and I can well understand the symbolism of burning a sexualised and perhaps, if ill-fitting, confining female garment to make a protest, but I love my bras! I’m a woman, my anatomy means I need a little support throughout the day, I’m an artist and craftswoman, I appreciate beautiful well made things. This garment may have been overly sexualised in the mass-media but for me it is simply the confidence that comes from being comfortable, wearing something well made, well fitting and beautiful, just for me…

    Art in the Dark Part 12

    My surprise interview with creative change NI on the opening night of my show in SpaceCRAFT… As you can see I was completely unprepared for this, but having the experience thrust upon me was a good learning tool for me…

    Red and those Big Bad Wolves

    Just to further illustrate a point…

    The Vampire Diaries - Love Sucks…

    A more teenage version but mostly the same idea; wolves in sheepskin leather jackets, girls dressed in red, sex and violence, charm and death etc.

    There are so many versions of this at the moment, such as Twilight (which I refuse to post here, again vampires and warewolves, sex and violence) and Buffy before that, they even dressed her as Little Red for a Halloween episode,although she could swing the axe… should we be worried we are now portraying a generation of women submitting to these wolves?

    I’m giving her some protection, just in case she changes her mind…

    The Village (2004)

    From Writer and Director M.Night Shyamalan. As with many of his films the appearence of red signals something bad or dangerous. A visually beautiful tale that is not at all what it seems…

    The Red Shoes (1948)

    Re-mixed with Joy Divisions “She’s lost Control” (Oh I love it when people re-mix things, storytelling in it’s truest form, reused and retold…)

    The film is about the staging of a ballet version of Andersen’s tale, The Red Shoes. Both the ballet and the overall narrative deal with obsession and end in tragedy, although the ballet spares us the gory ending from the origional tale, of cutting of her feet, instead here they kill her from exhaustion…

    John Lewis She’s Always a Woman

    Beautiful advert carrying the narrative of an entire life in a few short moments, that tread of red running through it…

    When this first aired last year I fell in love with it, indeed it caused a stir seemingly bringing half the country to tears on it’s first showing…

     Chanel No.5 Little Red Riding Hood (1998)

    Beautiful Chanel No.5 ad, I do have a thing about their adverts and this is my perfume. I’ve always thought fairy tales smell like it but I’d forgotten about this advert, now that I see it again I remember watching it enthralled; perhaps this is why I associate Paris and this perfume with fairy tales… ah the power of mnemonics!
